日本のインドア農業企業の株式会社スプレッド（本社：京都市）が開発した『Vegetable Factory(TM)』が、2016年「Edison Awards」における園芸分野において金賞を受賞しました。授賞式は、2016年4月21日にアメリカ・ニューヨークのEdison Awards Galaにて開催されました。園芸分野において、革新的な技術として世界的な評価を受けました。
Vegetable Factory (TM) developed by Japan-based indoor farming company, SPREAD Co., Ltd. (SPREAD), (Headquarters: Kyoto, Japan) won gold in the horticulture category of the Edison Awards in 2016. The awards ceremony was held at the Edison Awards Gala in New York, NY on April 21st, 2016. They received world recognition for innovative technology in horticulture.
さらにスプレッドは次世代型植物工場を建設中で、2017 年末の完成を予定しています。単一のレタス工場としては世界最大級の生産能力を持ち、栽培工程の自動化を実現した植物工場になります。
In addition, SPREAD has been constructing the next generation plant factory whose completion is expected by the end of 2017. It will become the world’s largest automated lettuce production facility.
スプレッド社によると、自社で保有する工場野菜の栽培技術やノウハウを生かし、設備技術メーカーとの協力で、最先端野菜生産システムを完成させました。世界初の大規模植物工場による栽培工程の自動化、水のリサイクル技術、自社開発の植物工場専用LED照明、環境制御技術など、多くの新技術が誕生したとのことです。植物工場の大きな課題の一つはコストです。しかし、既に存在する自社のプラントと比較して大幅なコスト削減に成功しています。
According to SPREAD, utilizing cultivation technologies and their expertise of their own factory-grown vegetables, SPREAD completed development of the cutting-edge vegetable production system in cooperation with the manufacturers who developed the technology being used in the system. Many new technologies were born, such as automation of the cultivation process by the world’s first large plant factory, water recycling technology, in-house developed LED lighting dedicated to the plant factory, and environmental control technology. One of the major issues for plant factories is cost. However, they have succeeded in greatly reducing the cost compared with their existing plant.

The Edison Awards is an annual competition honoring excellence in new product and service development. Awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) and symbolize persistence and excellence in innovation. In the past, Steve Jobs, a prominent Apple founder, and others have received Edison Awards.
